A Big Dose of Fun in the Sun

Published by John Kaiser on

Triangle holds three big events in just three weeks to close out the summer.

For many, the dog days of summer mean kicking back and relaxing.  But at Triangle, we’ve been busier than ever with a flurry of events over the past few weeks.

On Monday, July 31st, the annual Triangle Golf Classic at Charles River Country Club hosted 100 guests and golfers. This year’s tournament raised a record $98,000 that will support the more-than-2,000 people receiving Triangle services in the upcoming year. Special thanks to The TJX Companies who sent a dozen volunteers, more than 30 golfers, and served as the tournament’s Presenting Sponsor.  More than 15 Triangle participants and staffers attended and participated in the festivities throughout the day as well. And a special shout out to Ryan, from Triangle’s Salem program, for sharing an update on his life as a member of the Triangle community.  Ryan returned to the golf tournament after giving remarks at our 2018 event, giving our longtime supporters an opportunity to see how he has flourished in our programs over the past five years.

A few weeks later, on Saturday, August 12th, Triangle held its 5th annual Beach:Ability event that welcomed nearly 200 Triangle program participants, residents, staff, and community members to Constitution Beach in East Boston. Supported by a generous grant from Save the Harbor/Save the Bay’s Better Beaches program, Beach:Ability highlights how Boston Harbor’s public beaches are a welcoming and fun place for people of all abilities. The Department of Conservation & Recreation’s Universal Access Program provided us with an armada of floating and sand wheelchairs so that everyone could enjoy a swim and stroll around in the sand.  Piers Park Sailing Center provided accessible kayaking to attendees once again and, new this year, A Trike Called Funk provided DJs, a dance floor, and a whole lot of positive vibes on shore!

And no Triangle summer would be complete without the Bashers, our Special Olympics softball team comprised of members of the greater Triangle community.  On Thursday, August 17th, the Bashers continued their dominance of the Triangle staff and community members (newly named the Tri Sox) at the annual community scrimmage. Unlike tight contests in years past, this year saw a mercy rule imposed as the Bashers opened up a double-digit lead in just three innings. The team carried this positive momentum into their tournament on Saturday by winning both of their Special Olympics games and winning gold medals at regionals in Marlborough.

While the summer ended with a flurry of activity, we aren’t slowing down anytime soon.  Stay tuned for more updates on future events!
