Jason’s Story

Published by Ava Pizziferri on

Monday, June 23rd marked a big day in the life of long-time Triangle program participant, Jason.  After years of living in a group home setting, he moved into a new home to live independently while receiving Triangle’s new residential services offering called In-Home Supports.  This model provides on-going and on-call support for people with disabilities who do not require the extensive coverage provided by a 24/7 group home.  Instead, people receiving In-Home Supports focus their services on areas of specific need that will enhance their life and advance their personal and professional goals.

Jason, who has received employment supports from Triangle for many years and is an active attendee at our social and recreational events, is our first client for In-Home Supports.  His new home is a repurposed Triangle residence that will now be home to Jason and three other future In-Home Support clients.  This group will do their own shopping, manage their own schedules, and learn to manage a household together, while having a Triangle staffer, called a Life Enhancement Specialist, checking in with each person as an added support. As an example, after moving into his freshly painted new room, Triangle Chief Program Officer Drew Warren took Jason to the grocery store. In the process, Drew observed that Jason was choosing his own food for the first time, rather than having a kitchen stocked by someone else. Something as basic as his choice of cereal highlights that he now has more control of his life and all the new decisions he will get to make for himself. Jason’s In-Home Supports team will also be able to work directly with his employment support team, ensuring a continuity of services across multiple departments at Triangle.

As Drew and other Triangle team members assisted Jason while moving into his new home, the pride he had been feeling in this important step in his life was evident. He was thrilled to be living on his own and is excited to be starting a new chapter.

In addition to Jason and his future roommates, Triangle will also build a deeper roster of clients who live independently throughout our service area to provide the same supports to additional people with disabilities.
