Why Travel Training Matters: Supporting Independence One Trip at a Time

Published by Ava Pizziferri on

For many people, transportation is something they don’t think twice about. Driving a car, catching a bus, or taking the train are part of everyday life. For individuals with disabilities, navigating public transportation can feel overwhelming without support and preparation.  In fact, lack of reliable transportation can serve as a major barrier to employment if skills are not developed at an early stage in life. At Triangle, Inc., one of our key goals is fostering independence, and travel training plays an important role in helping people build the confidence and skills to navigate their communities.

We use travel training opportunities to teach individuals how to safely and confidently use public transportation while taking steps towards greater independence. Training often includes

  • Reading schedules and maps
  • Navigating train stations
  • Using fare systems
  • Planning routes
  • Problem-solving with delays and travel disruptions

Each travel training session helps participants build confidence and gain greater control over their daily lives. By learning to travel independently, individuals can get to work, attend medical appointments, participate in recreational and educational opportunities, and make more choices about where and when they want to go.

For people with disabilities, reliable transportation can be a barrier to employment opportunities. Learning to travel independently helps expand access to jobs, training, and other opportunities in the community.

At Triangle, we equip people to achieve their goals. Travel training helps make that possible, one trip at a time.
