Building Community & Breaking Barriers: Celebrating Hispanic and Latino Heritage Month

September 15 marks the kickoff of Hispanic or Latino Heritage Month—a time to honor the vibrant histories, rich cultures, and lasting contributions of Hispanic and Latino communities. At Triangle, Inc., our mission is rooted in the fundamental belief that everyone deserves the tools, dignity, and opportunities to lead independent, self-directed lives. Advancing genuine equity means recognizing that our organization is part of a larger community —one enriched and driven by the cultural heritage of Hispanic and Latino participants, families, advocates, and staff throughout our service area.

This month, we are focusing on the Hispanic and Latino community in Massachusetts and exploring how intersectionality shapes human services, and committing to culturally grounded disability advocacy.

From long-established communities to newer generations of neighbors, Hispanic and Latino residents have profoundly shaped Massachusetts. Across neighborhoods in East Boston, Lawrence, Chelsea, Lynn, Holyoke, and Springfield, Latino leaders, families, and workers form an integral part of our cultural and economic foundation.

Whether powering small businesses, leading grassroots organizing, enriching local arts, or serving on the front lines of caregiving and essential community services, the Latino community brings vital energy and resilience to our commonwealth.

Intersectionality: Navigating Disability and Independent Living

At Triangle, Inc., we know that disability rights and social equity are inseparable. Meaningful support requires intersectionality: recognizing that a person’s experience of disability cannot be untangled from their racial, cultural, and linguistic identity.

Within Hispanic and Latino families, individuals navigating disabilities and neurodivergence frequently face compounded hurdles when trying to access vital care and independent living supports:

• Multilingual Language Access: Essential resources, state paperwork, and clinical documentation are too often provided strictly in English. Language access is not an added luxury; it is a basic civil right that allows Spanish-speaking families to advocate for their loved ones on equal footing.
• Cultural Nuance and Care Frameworks: Different communities hold distinct frameworks surrounding family caretaking, neurodiversity, and intergenerational support. Approaching services through cultural humility—actively listening rather than imposing rigid institutional models—is vital to building trust with families.
• Resource and Geographic Equity: Ensuring that individuals in underserved neighborhoods have equitable, direct access to workforce development, assistive technology, community housing, and transition services.

• Workforce Development: Through programs like Pre-ETS and Adult Employment, we connect individuals with competitive employment opportunities while partnering with regional employers to build culturally welcoming workplaces.
• Accessible Resources: We continually work to break down language and logistical barriers so individuals have the communication tools and daily living skills necessary to live with autonomy.
