Neurodiversity Celebration Week
It is Neurodiversity Celebration Week, a global initiative dedicated to recognizing the many ways the human brain functions. At Triangle, Inc., we are marking the week by highlighting the neurodiversity movement and the various ways our programs support our community.
Defining the Terms
Understanding the distinction between “neurodiversity” and “neurodivergent” is essential for accurate advocacy.
- Neurodiversity: This describes the reality of the human species. We all have different minds. Just as biodiversity encompasses every living organism, neurodiversity encompasses every human mind. It is not a synonym for disability; it is a term to describe the full breadth human neurological differences.
- Neurodivergent: This term refers to individuals whose brains function, learn, and process information differently than what is considered “typical.” It serves as an umbrella term for a vast range of experiences. It is not a diagnosis. It is a term some people use to describe an element of their identity.
A Comprehensive Umbrella
The “Neurodivergent Umbrella” is expansive – click here to read last year’s blog post to learn more about the Neurodivergent Umbrella. While Autism and ADHD are frequently discussed, the framework includes a wide array of neurological and cognitive experiences. The following list is non-exhaustive:
- Learning & Processing: Intellectual Disability, Dyslexia, Dyspraxia, Dyscalculia, and Dysgraphia
- Mental Health & Neurobiology: Bipolar, Schizophrenia, OCD, and Tic Disorders
- Acquired & Sensory Conditions: ABI/TBI (Acquired or Traumatic Brain Injury), Epilepsy, and Synesthesia
- Internal Processing: Variations in internal monologue, thinking in images, or experiencing plurality
It is important to mention those whose experiences do not fit neatly into standard diagnostic categories, who do not have access to diagnosis or support, and those who manage a complex intersection of multiple conditions.

Individualized Planning: Rather than a standardized curriculum, our staff works one-on-one with participants to identify specific goals—whether that is independent living, career advancement, or social engagement.
Advocacy in Action: By providing resources and coaching, we empower our participants to practice self-advocacy in the workplace and the community, ensuring their communication styles and processing needs are respected.
As we celebrate the diversity of all human minds this week, Triangle, Inc. remains dedicated to the idea that a community is strongest when every member has the tools to navigate the world on their own terms.
