Racial Equity & Diversity Curriculum
Triangle, Inc.’s Racial Equity Committee is a group started in 2020 by a multi-department coalition of staff members who believed a more thoughtful examination of identity, race, and inclusion was essential for the organization given the diversity of the team members it employs and to honor the lived experiences of each person in our programs. This initiative led to more than 100 hours of staff trainings/dialogs and, in partnership with a racial equity consultant, the development of an award-winning curriculum for our program participants.
In addition to implementing these sessions across our programs, we also provide this training for fellow disability service providers, local school districts, and community organizations. The curriculum (typically five, one-hour weekly class) includes activities and discussions that address racism, discrimination, bias, racial equity, and diversity. This course is easy to customize to meet the needs of each of our partners and is based on leading clinical best-practices for discussing and teaching sensitive subject matter with people with intellectual and developmental disabilities.
Courses will cover these topics (and can be modified to fit your needs):
- Creating a safe space: course attendees will create a list of expectations that we all agree to adhere to
- Embracing our differences
- Understanding racism
- Stereotypes and prejudice
- Understanding microaggressions
- People of color with disabilities experience racism and ableism
- Understanding intersectionality
- Being an ally to people of color is important
