Disability Pride Month: Getting in the Door
To celebrate Disability Pride Month, we are sharing a 5-part series about the daily experiences of living with a disability. In July, we will explore hidden hurdles that people without disabilities often overlook.
We often use the phrase “getting your foot in the door” to describe finding a career opportunity. It is a great metaphor for getting a chance to prove your value. But for a person with a disability, the reality of this process often looks like unlocking a series of extra doors that most job seekers never have to think about.

The Invisible Hurdles
The checklist for a job seeker with a disability starts long before the interview:
- The Digital Door: Many online application portals are not designed to work with screen readers or assistive technology. If a website isn’t accessible, a candidate is locked out before they can even submit a resume.
- The Transit Door: Getting to an interview requires transportation planning. Job seekers have to research the route ahead of time: Is the train station elevator working? Are sidewalks cracked or blocked? Will paratransit show up on time, or make me late?
- The Interview Door: At the building, physical hurdles return—like heavy doors or narrow hallways. Furthermore, standard interview processes often rely heavily on rigid social cues or intense eye contact, creating artificial barriers for neurodivergent candidates.
After clearing these hurdles, candidates often face an interviewer who focuses on their disability instead of their qualifications, treating inclusive hiring like charity instead of a smart business decision.
The World Works Better With Us: This year’s Disability Pride theme reminds us that workplaces thrive when individuals with disabilities are fully integrated, supported, and valued.
