NDEAM Program Participant Spotlight: Cynthia

Published by Zoe Campbell on

This month, in honor of National Disability Employment Awareness Month (NDEAM), we are highlighting a Triangle program participant who has been working hard in 2020, despite the challenges presented by the pandemic. Cynthia is employed at Alltown Convenience Market doing janitorial work, including cleaning and mopping the floor, clearing the trash, and cleaning the outside and inside of the establishment.

When Cynthia began working with her Triangle Employment Specialist, James, in December 2019, she had not worked in 30 years. She was extremely dedicated to getting back into the workforce, and wanted to have a set schedule and be productive. With James’s help, she interviewed for the position at Alltown Convenience and was hired in February. Cynthia loves this job because it gives her plenty of opportunities to socialize with coworkers and guests, works well with her schedule, and keeps her busy. Cynthia values this role as it gets her out of the house and gives her a strong sense of purpose.

Cynthia’s work ethic since beginning her job has impressed everyone around her, and she has not missed a single shift since she started. James said, “that speaks volumes especially with the current situation of the pandemic.” Cynthia’s coworkers love having her around and value her hard work, reliability, and dedication. She is staying safe at work during the pandemic thanks to Alltown providing masks, hand sanitizer, and gloves to all employees.

Cynthia shows that through determination and perseverance, getting back into the workforce is possible despite hurdles that may be in the way. We are proud to have program participants who are working hard and showing the world that we are all people with ability!

Each October, NDEAM celebrates America’s workers with disabilities and reminds employers of the importance of inclusive hiring practices. This year is the 75th anniversary of the first NDEAM observance, and the theme is “Increasing Access and Opportunity.” To learn more, you can check out our blog post that dives into the history of NDEAM.
